2023 - West - Grand Junction CO - Colorado National Monument - July 31

July 31 - Moved our RVs to Grand Junction CO today. Seeing it was only a short drive we set up camp quickly and drove to Colorado National Monument.

2023 - West - Escalante Canyon near Delta CO - July 30

July 30 - We read about a place where you could swim in the potholes of a stream in Escalante Canyon. Jim & Jill brought their dog, Jazzy. The drive was beautiful.

A field of bighorn sheep -

2023 - West - Montrose CO - Ouray Perimeter Trail & Black Canyon of Gunnison - July 28-29

July 28 - Vaughan, Jim & Jill hiked the Ouray Perimeter Trail. The hike is up above the town with cliff passages, multiple waterfalls, and over 1600 feet of elevation change.

July 29 - Drove through Black Canyon of Gunnison (Montrose CO). Black Canyon has some of the steepest, craggiest cliffs in North America. A beautiful river runs at its base. It is a truly breath-taking place.

Yes, that's me waving down there on the point.

2023 - West - Montrose CO - July 24 to July 26

July 24 – Left Durango for Montrose CO. Decided to take the long way around over Lizard Pass (thru Cortez and Delores) due to the steep climbs on 550.  It added about 70 miles but may have saved us an engine and/or brake failure.

Once we got to Montrose we decided to use the extensive bike trails around the outskirts of town. Unfortunately, I believe the rapid altitude change got to me and I crashed – scraped up my bad knee and my elbow but nothing broken. Apparently I passed out 2 more times- luckily Jim caught me.  Vaughan & Jim rode back to camp and got the Jeep to haul my bloody body home.

July 25 – Jeeped Last Dollar Highway and then had lunch in Telluride.

July 26 – Drove to Silverton and out an old Jeep road (Rt 31) to see Yankee Girl Mine.

Ouray's Bear Creek Falls -

View from Bear Creek Falls towards Silverton.

Route 31 - abandoned mines.

Yankee Girl Mine -

On to Animas Forks - a long bumpy road to an old mining ghost town. Still snow over the creek in spots.

View of Red Mountain on the drive back -

Lunch in back in Ouray at my favorite burger joint, Maggie's Kitchen and then a short walk to Ouray's Cascade Falls.

We saw a herd of elk in Ridgeway along with their calves.
