August 12 thru 14 - Left Cody, Wyoming for Anaconda, Montana (near Butte). This stop gave us a few days to recuperate from the constant hiking & Jeeping that we have been doing over the last month.
Anaconda was known for copper smelting. Although the Washoe smelter was demolished in 1981 the smelter stack is still standing. It was completed in 1919 and is one of the tallest free-standing brick structures in the world at 585 feet (taller than the Washington monument).
Anaconda is also known for the Fairmont Hot Springs. We spent the afternoon basking in them and then enjoyed a tremendous waterslide. This is Jill on her first run down.
Each morning we rode our bikes on the Copperway Trail.
For a couple of years, my family and I lived in Butte when I was a child. We later moved to Whitehall for 10 years. And before that, my grandfather was an immigrant from Italy and worked for the Anaconda mining company in Butte, working in the huge mine there.
