2023 -West - Cody WY - Bighorn Canyon & Pryor Mountain Wild Mustangs - August 11 cont.

August 11 - After leaving the Beartooth Highway with our travel companions (Jim, Jill, David & Kathy) we had burgers in Red Lodge MT at the Red Box Car along the river.

Vaughan & I decided to continue on to Lovell WY and Bighorn Canyon which is beside the Pryor Mountains. When my Dad was around he asked me to spread half of his ashes there and put the remainder in with my Mom in her mausoleum. Back in 2010, we did just that.

We chose Devil Canyon back in 2010 because it is in between the  Bighorn Mts and Pryor Mts. The River below is the Bighorn river which flows into Yellowstone. In 2010 there were 2 goats standing along the edge of the canyon. That's how I knew it was the perfect spot.

There was a falcon riding the currents while we were there (kinda a nod from my Dad who was a bird lover).

This was the exact spot where I laid down and set Dad free over the canyon.
The Pryor Mountains are in the background.

We drove further into the Pryors hoping to see some wild mustangs.

We came up on these beauties but they were not the wild ones.

Finally we found an old dirt road, Burnt Timber Rd, which locals said were where the mustangs could be seen.

We drove down this horrible rutted, wash-board road for a few miles and decided to turn around. Off in the distance we found a our mustangs (at least a few). A very successful, heart-warming trip.
