August 18 - With a little light rain this morning the skies are finally clearing a little more. We decided to stay a while longer in West Glacier. Today we took on a beautiful 7 mile hike starting at the Trail of the Cedars which flows into a trail to Avalanche Lake. The trail followed a creek with many pools and waterfalls up to a clear lake surrounded by 5 waterfalls cascading off the mountains.
The roots of these cedars crawl over the rocks to seek nutrition making quite an amazing sight at times.
The creek is always at our side. Even as we climb nearly 800 feet we can hear the stream below.
There was so much deadfall. The wind blows so fiercely through these trees that we could hear the crashing into each other as they swayed.
We frequently had to stop and rest during such a long uphill hike, We tried hitching a ride but nothing seemed to come by.
With the skies clearing we were finally able to see the mountains more clearly,
Finally the lake came into view along with it's many waterfalls.
Montana's Steller's Jay.
Vaughan, Jim and Jill walked to the other end of the lake while I stayed on the beach.
Yes, that is Jill peeking through this knot hole.
